Dining room changes...

Posted October 29, 2010 by Christina

Here is my dining room as it is now... With dark brown paint and the mirror collage. I am not in love. We have an ugly ceiling fan that was existing and most of the furniture was new. I had the drapery made and put in just after we moved in a couple of years ago. I have been dying to change this room for a while now but have been kind of undecided on what exactly to do. (I have had a square of Slate Grey from Restoration Hardware painted on the wall for 3 months or so waiting for my husband to give in.)

So we will paint and I have decided to sell the mirrors to make way for a large reproduction clock face with zinc. I am so excited! I am hoping that the grey on grey will work for the space. I would really love to have some mirrored window panes here - but a clock face will do nicely for now.  I am going to recover the chair seats too once the painting is done.  I found a great settee at the Long Beach Flea Market a few months back that I was thinking of putting in here but it is too low so I have another location planned for that.

The floor will remain unfinished concrete as I am still deciding if we should stain it or just wait for the wood flooring I liked to be within my budget.

I have decided to go ahead with the Slate paint from Restoration Hardware- I love the dark contrast with the white trim. As we progress I will have to give you an update...

(I know I never did do an update on the front door project- they look amazing- I will have to take some pictures and post them.)

What do you think?

love your blog. The RH slate is intoxicating. I’ve done the same, painted my boiserie in RH slate, contemplating painting the entire room. Can’t wait to see your end result…

Cute Beams

Your plans so wonderful. I collect mirrors… would love to purchase one of your beauties! Would you ship one all the way to Florida?! And I love your chairs. Anxious to see what fabric selections you come up with.

I think you made a wise move. While the mirrors are wonderful, to me they read a bit overwhelming in the space. With the zinc clock face on grey, the room will read calm and serene.

As far as the concrete floor, I like how it looks now, but if you want to have it read a bit dressier, there are so many wonderful rugs out now. Either way- it’s cool!

I think your dining room is completely and utterly stunning right now- I love the table and tolix chairs make me swoon- they look gorgeous mixed with the black bamboo ones. The paint reads charcoal on my screen but if it is brown, I agree that the slate grey will look amazing. I’m sure the changes you make will look fantastic..it really is a gorgeous room!

I think it is already a beautiful room too. The mirrors are perfect! I am seeing clocks everywhere – are you sure you want to? The table is fantastic! Where did you get it? All in all, a beautiful room and I am sure it will be just as wonderful with the new look! Can’t wait to see!

I think the space is lovely now, but the changes will be even better. Love the huge clock face and the gray paint will be wonderful. I’m having nightmares with my stained concrete floors on my covered porch. Tthe sealer is now chipping. I am working with a client that we stained and waxed their floors and even with children and a dog they are holding up beautifully. The wax is the trick. Feel free to contact me if you want to.

I can’t get over the mirrors. They are to.die.for! The whole room is beautiful but if you are going to re-do I think grey would be fabulous!

I agree. I love it as is but I also love grey on grey. I’m sure that would be beautiful too.

I would say NOT to stain the concrete. At my DAY job, we have stained and sealed concrete floors that were done professionally and the sealed finish ended up cracking and flaking off. We had to get people in to chip it off and then reseal it. It was a nightmare.

I am looking forward to the new room, I’m loving it now though. I have a settee waiting to be reupholstered for the dining room too, it’s too low as well but I’m going to have the legs raised up a bit and have it skirted.

This room is incredible already — earthy yet sophisticated and I adore the floors in their current, unfinished state.
I painted our powder room in the RH slate last year and I adore the color — would put it everywhere if the hubby would allow!
I love that is has a taupey undertone, like a real slate slab would, rather than reading like a light, dove-y, blue-ish Christian Dior gray.
It looks warm and wonderful but has depth, and it will surely do the same in your dining room. Can’t wait to see the unveil.
Cheers, Alcira

Love it as it is but I think the mirrors will be more subtle when having a grey background for them. You have great taste:)I am tired of big clocks, mirror rocks;)

OMG Christina I love the room as it is now, but your design vision of how the room will be after the re-do also sounds amazing!
What every you decide will turn out fantastic. You have fantastic taste and such a good eye for design!

Those mirrors are gorgeous. How can you part with them!! I’d be in pieces if I had to say goodbye to such fab collection..!

I can’t wait to see the next phase of this.

Halloween hugs from Sydney!

I think the zinc clock face will make your room more distinctive. The mirrors are nice, but very identifiable as RH catalog, whereas the zinc clock face will be more unique, which seems more “you.”. Love the idea! Can’t wait to see it!

Have a great weekend!

Hello Again Chris:

I just painted our living room Restoration Hardware Slate. It had been black! Everyone loved it black. Lots of white moldings, big bay window and white carpeting. I fell in love with Slate from RH and painted it about 4 weeks ago. I truly love it and so does everyone else. It is absolutely beautiful in the evening with lamps on in the room. I am also designing our sons new restaurant. He is a chef and he loved my living room so…………….we are doing RH Slate in the restaurant. I am going to be doing a post as we progress. I am combining the Slate with dark brown leather booths, chocolate brown glass tiles and red accent high tech frosted pendants over tables and over the bar area. Very happy with the progress so far. We should be done in about two weeks. I wish you luck on your dining room. You will love the slate!
